The Off-Road Vehicle Your Auto Policy Won't Cover

September 23, 20262 min read

Many clients who own ATVs, UTVs, or dirt bikes assume their existing policies cover them. Standard homeowners ends at the property line. Standard auto doesn't apply to recreational vehicles at all. The gap between those two policies is where most off-road claims land.

Many clients who own ATVs, UTVs, or dirt bikes assume their existing policies cover them. The reality is more complicated — and the coverage gaps can be significant.

What Homeowners Covers — and Where It Stops

A standard homeowners policy may provide limited liability for an ATV or UTV operated on the insured premises. Once the vehicle leaves the property listed on the policy, that coverage typically ends. Physical damage to the vehicle itself is almost never included under homeowners.

So a client who stores their UTV at home, takes it to a trail system on the weekend, and gets into an accident there may have no homeowners coverage for that loss at all.

What Auto Covers — and What It Doesn't

Standard personal auto policies cover motor vehicles designed for use on public roads. ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes are recreational vehicles not designed for road use — which means they typically fall outside auto coverage entirely, regardless of where the client uses them.

This isn't a gray area in most policies. It's an explicit category of vehicle that the standard auto form doesn't address.

What That Leaves the Client With

A client who totals their $15,000 UTV on a trail, or whose ATV causes serious injury to another rider, may find that neither their homeowners nor their auto policy responds to the claim. A standalone off-road vehicle policy covers both liability and physical damage for recreational use — and it's a straightforward add for any client who owns this equipment.

For any client who mentions owning an ATV, UTV, dirt bike, or similar recreational vehicle, the question is whether they've specifically insured it. Many haven't — and most assume they're covered under a policy that doesn't apply.
